The Pende live in a region near the Loango and Kasai Rivers and the tribe consists mostly of farmers. the Pende are not governed by a central authority, but pay allegiance to family chiefs, known as the Djigo, who are sometimes assisted by various nobles. young men are organized into age groups and pass through initiation stages, including circumcision at adolescence.

Pende art is divided into two principal aesthetic traditions. The first is derived from the western Pende who live along the Loango River, and the second from the eastern Pende who settled along the Kasai River.
